  1. Key Terms for The Alchemist Things to keep in mind as you read

  2. King Melchizedek Few mysteries of the Bible have been as intriguing as the mystery of the identity of Melchizedek. Some have speculated that Melchizedek is Yeshua (Jesus), or the archangel Michael, or Shem the son of Noah, or just an ordinary human, or even another divine being as a type of Christ. Melchizedek was the King and High Priest of Salem (the original name of Jerusalem). He greeted Abraham (called Abram at this time) after he had rescued his brother’s son Lot from Chedorlaomer, one of the kings who fought against the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah and had taken Lot captive (Gen. 14:9-18).

  3. And Melchizedek king of Shalem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tenth of all. (Genesis 14:18-20)

  4. Moors • The description Moors has referred to several historic and modern populations of Arab, Black African and Berber descent from Northern Africa. They came to conquer, occupy and rule the Iberian Peninsula for nearly 800 years. At that time they were Muslim, although earlier the people had followed other religions. They called the territory Al Andalus, comprising most of what is now Spain and Portugal.

  5. Levanter Strong wind of the western Mediterranean Sea and the southern coasts of France and Spain. It is mild, damp, and rainy and is most common in spring and fall. The levanter reaches its maximum intensities in the Strait of Gibraltar, where it sometimes brings eastward-flying airplanes almost to a standstill. It causes foggy weather on the Spanish coast for up to two days at a time.

  6. Islam • Five Pillars of Islam • The Qur'an (Koran) presents them as a framework for worship and a sign of commitment to the faith. They are (1) the shahada (The shahada is the Muslim declaration of belief in the oneness of God (tawhid) and acceptance of Muhammad as God's prophet.) (2) daily prayers (salat), (3) fasting during Ramadan (sawm), (4) almsgiving (the giving of a fixed portion of one's wealth to charity, generally to the poor and needy) and (5) the pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) at least once in a lifetime.

  7. Koran, Allah • Koran is the religious text for Islam • Allah is the Islamic word for God

  8. Mecca • Mecca (Makkah in Arabic) is the center of the Islamic world and the birthplace of both the Prophet Muhammad and the religion he founded.

  9. Urim & Thummim • Objects used as a kind of divine oracle. Since the days of the Alexandrian translators of the Old Testament it has been asserted that mean "revelation and truth" or "lights and perfections“ • An instrument prepared of God to assist man in obtaining revelation from the Lord and in translating languages.
