Who were they? • A guerilla group driven by communist ideas • 1975- 1979; Khmer Rouge killed approximately 2 million Cambodians • Planned the necessary steps to turn the society into an agrarian society • Wanted to transform the society from industrial to farming • Ultimate goal was to create a nation where everyone was equal, farming was the only job

  3. More Information • In 1970 the Khmer Rouge gained control of over 2/3 of the country • North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops were forced to withdraw by 1973 • In 1975 The Cambodian government was completely taken over • Established “Democratic Kampuchea”

  4. Who was attacked? • Cambodians • People that didn’t fit the requirements to make the world a farming agriculture • Intellectuals and skilled workers were assassinated • Many died early on because of starvation • Some families grew on to the idea and played dumb to survive

When we were liberated we felt that we had a new life.” • “What I remember most is the separation and the killing.” • “We worked using our hands. It was hard and when we did not finish they did not allow us to eat.” • “If a person didn't work according to their orders they would kill us. They always said 'keeping you is no gain and losing you is no loss'.”

Lon Him • “When I saw the Khmer Rouge for the first time, I seemed to feel happy because the war was ended and I could carry on my studies.” • “The next day they pointed guns at us and removed us from Phnom Penh. Some people who did not obey the order were shot instantly right in front of Ooma-Laum pagoda. I witnessed it with my own eyes.” • “If we were lazy we would be badly treated. Some people were taken away, especially those who were literate and talkative.” • “The people who survived were those who kept their backgrounds hidden and personal information about knowledge, jobs and other things. I dared not tell them which level of study I had got and what my job was.”

  8. What was going through their heads? • "Hey Pol, I've got an idea, man. Let's turn the country upside down and get real primitive. Evacuate all the cities, march everyone out to the country. And then start farming, man! Big time. And if anyone resists, let's execute them. In fact, let's kill a whole lot of people. I'm talking hundreds of thousands. Maybe millions. And do it real cruel-like. Bash their heads against trees, electrocute 'em, drown 'em in vats of cold water..."
