This session delves into the concept of synergy, exploring how collaborative efforts can achieve results that exceed individual capabilities. Participants will engage in tasks that require teamwork and discuss the implications of working together. We will examine the unique contributions of individuals and the importance of unity in achieving common goals. Inspired by the ideas of Robert Buckminster Fuller, we will also investigate how technology influences synergy, fostering innovation while posing potential challenges. Join us to explore the transformative power of collaboration.

Threshold Network Groups 2012 Week 1 Wednesday Synergy Sunìstemi “uniting, putting together”
3 Headed Being • Complete the following tasks: • Tear a piece of construction paper exactly in half • Take two separate socks and pair them • Give the person in the middle a sip of water
3 Headed Being • Discussion • Could any of the three individuals performed the task by themselves in their current state? (either one armed and blindfolded or armless with eyes?) • Why did they have to work together?

Synergy • A term made popular by Robert Buckminster Fuller. • “Synergy is the principle whereby the behavior of a whole system is greater than the sum of its parts, a result not predictable from an examination of the individual parts” (p. 2) • Fuller describes synergy with the alloy chrome-nickel-steel, a metal much stronger and more durable than any of the elements individually. Due to its strength and ability to withstand high temperatures, chrome-nickel-steel is often used in jet engines. http://www.eric.ed.gov/PDFS/ED367593.pdf
Who was Robert Buckminster Fuller? • An engineer, author, mathematician, inventor, futurist, philosopher, • Designed the Geodesic Dome – maximum space, least materials • based on “synergetic geometry” • Carbon molecule “fullerene” named after him • because of its geodesic shape • Dismissed from Harvard two times • Holds 25 patents and 47 honorary Doctorates • Authored 28 books http://www.bfi.org/about-bucky/biography
Disney’s Epcot (perhaps the most famous geodesic dome!) http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/dome/epcot.html
Fullerene A 3D model of a [[C60]] molecule, also called a "Buckyball". Created by Michael Ströck (mstroeck) on February 6, 2006 in iMol for Mac OS X and Photoshop CS2. Released under the GFDL.
How does technology effect synergy? • View Steve Johnson’s “Where Good Ideas Come From” • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NugRZGDbPFU&feature=related • Consider these questions: • How does technology encourage synergy? • In what ways does technology limit synergy? • What do you think the future of technology is within synergistic innovation?
