  4. To Conclude: Everything should be bound and gagged in a three ring binder. Make sure it’s not broken and easy to leaf through. Everything should be clean and organized. Dividers between sections rule. Pictures between sections rule. Any extra flourishes you want to put on your paper shows that you’re proud of your work and care and it puts me in a good mood. Be sure not to just include a bunch of extra stuff to “be on the safe side.” If there are extra rough drafts, pre writes, free writes, papers that don’t belong, homework from other classes etc. in the portfolio, it might put me in a bad mood. Have fun with your portfolio and be proud of it. It’s a reflection of how far you’ve come this semester. It’s rad. And don’t just leave it in my office – come pick it up. I’m not teaching this class again here so I don’t want your old portfolios. Don’t feel like you need to or should follow these directions mechanically / to the letter. Organize the portfolio in a way that makes sense to you. Think about style with every step. Give your sections / papers creative titles.

  5. Continued. Don’t forget about the bonus material. I’ve gotten really great stuff in this section in the past. I’ve gotten CD’s, collages, song lyrics, stories, essays, etc. Be sure to make it no more than 3 pages. (5 on the very outside if you want to show me a story, or if you’ve cleared something longer with me beforehand.) Do your best. Be honest and reflective and treat your work with integrity.

  6. Reflective Letter(s) Introductory Letter: We have “engaged in this genre” before. Many times. More or less a rehashing of the graded reflective letters we did, with an emphasis on the portfolio process. Just talk about the process of writing the papers, rewriting the papers, putting together the portfolio, how you feel about it, what you’ve learned, how the class will help you, etc. However you choose to do that is fine by me. If you can make this tired subject interesting, more power to you. Requirements: Talk about all the things I just said in a way that is fluid, well organized, and makes sense. One page, double spaced, normal margins. No more, no less. Keep the tone clean and conversational. Spelling counts. More than anything, the intro letter is like a final test of your mechanics.

  7. Continued… Intro Letters to the Papers: You will be writing two more short letters here: one for your best paper, and one for the other two revised papers. Both of them should briefly talk about the revision process: what you did to the papers and why, how you think you strengthened them, why you think the best paper is the best paper, etc. Requirements: Same asthe others. Length requirement: Approximately half a page for each letter. No longer than a page.
