  2. Where It Took Place • This battle took place along the Tennessee River just north of the Mississippi border

  3. When It Took Place • The Battle of Shiloh began in the early morning of April 6th, 1862 • This battle ended one day later, in the afternoon of April 7th, 1862

  4. Why It Took Place • The battle of Shiloh took place mainly because the Confederates realized that Grant's army was unaware of any enemy troops nearer than Corinth and decided to make a suprise attack

  5. Tactics • The Confederates saw a chance to surprise them and push them into a swamp. Then they changed tactics and tried to push them into the Tennessee river

  6. Generals • The general on the union side was Ulysses S. Grant • The Confederate generals were Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T Beauregard

  7. Albert Sidney Johnston • February 2, 1803 – April 6, 1862 • Served as a general in the Texas Army, The United States Army, and The Confederate Army • Considered to be the finest general before Robert E. Lee

  8. P.G.T Beauregard • May 28, 1818 – February 20, 1893 • a Louisiana-born American military officer, politician, inventor, writer, civil servant, and the first prominent general of the Confederates States Army

  9. Ulysses S. Grant • born Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885 • He was the 18th president of the United States • Defeated the Ku Klux Klan in 1871 • Aggressive commander at Battle of Shiloh

  10. Weapons • The weapons used, though not documented, were probably standard issue weapons, like Sharp’s rifles, swords for the leaders, and muskets for the soldiers

  11. Effects Afterwards • As a result of the battle, the Union was able to secure their position on the Western front • This gave the Union an advantage over the Confederated and helped them win the war

  12. Life After the War • Former soldiers returned to the farms and stores they had left so long ago • The end of the war in 1865 brought a welcome peace

  13. Casualties of Confederates • 1,723 dead • 8,012 wounded • 959 missing

  14. Casualties of the Union • 1,754 dead • 8,408 wounded • 2,885 missing

  15. Fun Facts • The battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest in U.S history at the time it was fought • The Shiloh church had to be used as a hospital because there were so many casualties
