Nature of Science • Scientific knowledge is a product of both observation and inference. • All scientific knowledge is tentative. • Scientific knowledge must involve the collection of data, be consistent with what we know about the world, and be testable. • All scientific knowledge combines both empirical evidence and the creative interpretation of data by scientists. • Scientific knowledge is necessarily subjective to some degree. • There is no single set or sequence of steps in a scientific investigation.

Scientific Practices • Identifying questions • Forming predictions • Making observations • Collecting and analyzing data • Modeling • Designing and conducting a scientific investigations • Constructing scientific explanations • Claim: an assertion or conclusion • Evidence:information or data that supports the claim • Reasoning: a scientific principle that connects the claim to the evidence provided

  7. Mr. Clemens’ Case Mr. Clements teaches high school chemistry in a community where steel mills and petrochemical plants have existed for many years. He often criticizes these industries for polluting the land, rivers, and air in the community. On every possible occasion, Mr. Clements cites how the waste materials of the steel and chemical industries are “poisoning the environment.” He often invites local environmental activists to speak to his classes about the problems of the smokestack industries and their effects on urban America. Mr. Clements requires all students to write a report on the problems of environmental pollution in their community.
