FACT SHEETDemocratic Republic of Congo ~ (DROC) • The term "blood diamond" originates from the horrific troubles in central Africa where hundreds of thousands have died. • Illegal diamond mining finances the war in the DROC. • Most of the diamond mining in the DROC takes place in the eastern part of the country, which is controlled by rebel forces. • Millions of Congolese have been forced out of the mining areas. • Widespread fighting between the DROC rebel forces and the government continue to cause migration and internal displacement of the Congolese people.

  5. DROC diamonds • The DROC is rich in a valuable resource diamonds. • But poor by measures of development e.g. • Health care • Housing • Quality of life for people • Education DROC IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF A LEDC

  7. The true cost of diamonds to the children of the DROC • Thousands of children are malnourished. • Thousands of children have lost their parents because of conflict. • Thousands have been displaced and live in refugee/displacement camps.

  8. The price of diamonds - victims of conflict • Young children are wounded in the conflict that is around them. • Children as young as 10 are taken as ‘Child Soldiers’ • Parents have to abandon their children, they are taken into camps as orphans, never to see their parents again.

  9. The price of life! • Children as young as 13 are made to work in the diamond mines • They do not attend school. • They have to work hard for 10 hours a day • They are paid $2 (£1.30) a week

  10. All work and no play~ this is my life • The work is very dangerous. • All the work is done by hand. • If they hurt or injure themselves there is no medical care available. • The children only work there is no play.
