  7. Humidifier System The following conditions represent correct water connection: • Installation of a shut –off tap in the supply water line • presence of a mechanical filter in the supply water line • water temperature and pressure within the allowed values • Drain hose resistant to temperatures of 100 °C • Minimum slope of the drain hose greater than or equal to 5° • Electrically non –conductive sleeve • Presence of a drain pan in the drain hose IMPORTANT WARNING: when installation is completed, flush the supply hose for around 30 minutes by piping the water directly into the drain without sending it into the humidifier. This will eliminate any scale or processing residues that may block the fill valve or cause foam when boiling.

  13. Humidifier System • The goal of the algorithm is to control the current flowing through the electrodes at the reference value needed to produce the percentage of steam required (by the user parameter set and by room regulation). • Due to the evaporation, the water level goes down and, as the measured current depends directly and proportionally on the water quantity inside the bottle, to keep it at the required value (Itarget) it should be necessary to fill continuously the bottle with very small water quantity. • As this is not possible, the measured current is controlled between two values: • Itarget – 5% Itarget • Itarget + 10% Itarget • by means of “feed/evaporating” cycles as shown in the following diagram:

  14. Humidifier System Besides the water level in the bottle, the other determinant factor which affects the outgoing of the measured current, is the water conductivity inside the bottle. In fact, during the feed/evaporating cycles the water conductivity will gradually increase, due to the salt concentration going up in the water inside the bottle. The measure of the water conductivity inside the bottle is carried out indirectly, by counting the time spent to complete an evaporating cycle Then this time is compared with the reference value (characteristic of each model of bottle) and, if less than this last, a certain quantity of water draining is performed (named dilution draining) then followed by feeding of less conductive water of network.

  15. Humidifier System The humidifier has then a conductivity meter which is capable to detect the network water conductivity coming inside when feeding. In case of high conductivity detection, the control algorithm inhibits the operation of the humidifier and give an alarm (that is displayed inclusively as high current alarm). This is to avoid that the incoming of high conductivity water can compromise the correct working of the humidifier.

  16. Humidifier System An other important element is the high level sensor, made up of two short electrodes placed on the roof of the bottle. Thehigh level sensor detects the water high level or the possible presence of foam.

  17. Humidifier System SETTING OF HUMIDIFIER PARAMETERS • access to the screen which permits the setting of the humidifier parameters, please carry out the following procedure: • Make the unit stop in stand-by (see UG40 user manual); • From the main screen, press Prg key, select Service Menu and confirm by pressing Enter; • Type in the Password Service (see envelope enclosed with the user manual) and confirm by pressing Enter; • select Software Settings and confirm by pressing Enter; • Scroll down the screens by pressing the Down key until the screen below appears on the display

  18. Humidifier System Timed Drains parameter set screen. This screen is visible if previous Timed drains Enable is set to Y. It allows to set how many starting of the humidifier (Number of Startups:) have to pass before activating the draining valve and how long (Drain Time:) is the draining. This special function allows to reduce the salt concentration inside the humidifier bottle, especially where the control algorithm is not capable to operate correctly due to the very short periods of humidifier continuous working.

  19. Humidifier System STATUS SCREEN

  20. Humidifier System Steam Prod. Kg/h: shows the present production in kg/h of steam of the humidifier. Saturated Cylinder: it shows that the bottle is full of calcareous scales: this is to warn that the steam production is reduced due to the bottle situation (in case it is necessary to clean or replace the bottle). High Level: It shows if the filling of water has reached the top limit of the bottle so that the level electrodes (placed in the roof of the bottle) touch the water surface. This conditions inhibits the operation of fill solenoid valve. Conduct.: S/cm it is the value of the conductivity of the humidifier feed water; the value is updated at every filling of water. N.B.: Due to the measuring mode, this is an approximate value. Meas. Current: it shows the TAM measured (present) value of the flowing current in the humidifier electrodes. Nom. Current: is the nominal value of the humidifier current (it depends on humidifier size and on nominal voltage). N.B.: The two values of current, measured and nominal, can differ even considerably without being moreover an index of anomaly, because the steam production is modulated between 20% and the maximum value set, proportionally to the room requirement.

  21. Humidifier System • The values of working hours and of number of starting of the humidifier bottle are necessary to evaluate the status and the durability of the bottle. To have access to these information: • From the main screen, press Prg key, select SettingsMenu and confirm by pressing Enter; • Type in the SettingPassword (see envelope enclosed with the user manual) and confirm by pressing Enter; • select Hourmeter Settings and confirm by pressing Enter; • Scroll down the screens by pressing the Down key until the screen below appears on the display:

  22. Humidifier System WORKING HOUR AND STARTING COUNTER SCREEN • Total Run Hours: it is the value of the working hours of the humidifier bottle. • N.B.: The hour counting is proportional to the steam production percentage (e.g. if the bottle operated for 2 hours at 50% of its nominal capacity, the number of counted hours is 1). • Alarm Limit: it allows to set a threshold of working hours, that, once reached, activates the signaling “SERVICE” to require the programmed maintenance. Its factory value is 0 (none alarm). • Reset: Command to clear (zeroing) the working hour counter. • Start.Number: it shows the total number of energizing of the humidifier relay. This value can help to understand how is working the humidifier: in case of running in continuous mode or long period (preferable) the shown value will be relatively low compared to the total running hours; vice versa in case of short running period (that indicates a capacity too much higher than the room needs) the starting number will be very high, even 10-20 times greater than the running hours. • Reset: Command to clear (zeroing) the starting number counter.

  25. Humidifier System AFS ANTI-FOAMING SYSTEM • DETECTED BY FOAM SENSORS • ELIMINATED BY DRAIN + FILL CYCLES TO MODIFY WATER COMPOSITION WITH NEW WATER

  26. Humidifier System By Humidifier Macroblock is possible to manage humidifier with immersed electrodes Steam is produced by boiling the water contained in the cylinder By Joule effect, the current heats the water to the boiling point To avoid this, the algorithm executes a repeated water fill / evaporation cycles During Evaporation cycle there is steam production and the water level decreases The cylinder needs to be continuously filled for maintain a constant current value

  27. Humidifier power 100% ON Dehumidification 30% OFF 10% 30% 20% Humidity Set Point 100% Proportional band 100% Proportional band Humidifier System HUMIDITY CONTROL

  28. Humidifier System FIRST STARTING method At the commissioning of the unit IT IS SUGGESTED TO force the humidifier running continuously (by altering the standard set point of humidification) so that to keep it operating until the nominal steam production capacity has been reached. In this way the maximum performances and the longest durability of the bottle are ensured

  29. Humidifier System • It is obvious that, if the humidifier is actuated for a very short period, the algorithm is no more capable to control correctly the salt concentration: when this condition occurs, the solution inside the bottle can become very aggressive so that causing the corrosion of the electrodes, making rapidlythe bottle to be unusable. This events is generally good visible due to the reddish colour that appears onto the inside surface of the bottle, that indicates clearly the presence of iron oxide particles in the composition of the limestone scales. Quite ever this phenomena is signalled by high current alarm or even by the tripping of the protection, due to the electrical sparks that the presence of conductive particles can trigger between the electrodes even through the same inside surfaces of the bottle. • The possible solutions are: • to increase the continuous running period of the humidifier. This can be done by acting on the total steam production capacity, in case of several units fitted, disabling the humidifier an all units except one (or two in case of stand-by automatic switch-over); or decreasing (in hardware configuration) the size of the humidifier and/or reducing the maximum steam production. • to activate the cyclical dilution enabling the specific option (Timed Drains Enable:Y) and adjusting, if necessary, the parameters accessible on the specific screen: the proposed values (a draining of 30 sec every 5 starting of the humidifier) should be enough. Good results were reported also setting a short dilution (draining of 5-10sec at maximum) at every starting of the humidifier.

  30. Humidifier System N.B.: Even if the control algorithm is capable to adequate its behaviour to a wide range of different characteristics of the feeding water, in some cases the bad performances of the humidifier can be improved by using a bottle more suitable to the characteristics of the local water: there are specific bottles for high conductivity water and also specific bottles for low and very low conductivity water.

  32. Humidifier System Cylinder maintenance The life of the cylinder depends on a number of factors, including: the complete filling with lime scale and/or the partial or complete corrosion of the electrodes, the correct use and sizing of the humidifier, the output, and the quality of the water, as well as careful and regular maintenance. Due to the aging of the plastic and the consumption of the electrodes, even an openable steam cylinder has a limited life, and it is therefore recommended to replace it after

  33. Humidifier System The steam humidifier has only one component which requires a periodical replacement:the steam production cylinder. This is necessary where the limestone scales that build up inside the cylinder prevent a sufficient flow of current. The frequency of this operation depends on the fill water :the higher the content of salts and impuraties, the more frequent will be the cylinder replacement. • The components to be checked yearly are: • Fill/drain solenoid valve:remove possible solid scales, without compressed air,and check the proper operation. • Hydraulic circuit/fill tank: remove possible scales along the while distance covered by water from the fill valve to entrance into the cylinder.Afterwards checks that there are no leaks or drips. • Steam pipe/condensation drainage: Check that from its beginning(the humidifier) to its end (distributor) in duct or ambient, there are no narrowing, thus preventing the normal output of the steam/condensation. • Humidity probe: Check the condition of the probes.Do not use compressed air or solvents to clean the probe. It is possible to wash the parts indicates above, whith a commercially available cleaner (normally ACID ACETIC 20% and water 80%).

  42. Humidifier System ALARM SCREENS • High Current Alarm. This alarm appears when the current flowing in the humidifier electrodes exceeds the high limit value. • Suggestions/Solutions: • Check the functionality of the drain valve; • Check the wet sealing of the fill valve when no energized; • Then drain some water from the bottle and restart.

  43. Humidifier System ALARM SCREENS • Power Loss Alarm. When there is the high level signal (bottle full of water) and in the same time the measured current is around 0 (less than 0,5% of nominal current). It can happen also in case of saturated bottle (electrodes fully coated of calcareous scales). Suggestions/Solutions: • Check for tripping of the protection device; • Check the wear status of the bottle; • Check for any leakage of the fill valve; • Check the cleaning of the level electrodes

  44. Humidifier System ALARM SCREENS • Loss of Water Alarm. It appears: • 1) During the filling phase: • when the maximum filling time has passed. • In case of anomalous value of current that do not correspond to the normal working of the filling. • 2) When in pre-washing cycle: • During filling phase, if the water level does not reach the high level electrodes before the maximum time of feeding has passed. • It can be caused also to leakage/malfunction of the drain valve. • Suggestions/Solutions: • Check that the feeding pipe from water net to the humidifier and the inside pipes are not obstructed or bended and that there is enough water pressure (0.1÷0.8 MPa, 18 bar); • Check the functionality of the fill valve; • Check for a great head pressure on the steam discharge, so that to inhibit the normal feeding of water inside the bottle; • Check that the steam delivery pipe is not obstructed or that there is not a siphon of condensate; • verificare che il tubo di mandata del vapore non sia strozzato o che non vi siano sacche di deposito di condensa; • Check the functionality and the wet sealing of the drain valve

  45. Humidifier System ALARM SCREENS • Maintenance Requiring Alarm • If a threshold of running hours was set, when this value is reached this alarm is given. • To clear this alarm it is necessary before: • To increase the threshold value (in case of bottle cleaning), or; • To reset the running hour counter (in case of bottle replacing). • When resetting the hour counter it is needed to reset also the starting number counter to maintain the coherence of both values.
