  2. Should I Apply? • Do not have to apply immediately after undergraduate work. • Application process = one course • Large amount of time • Not luxurious lifestyle

  3. Program(s) available? • At York: 6 Different programs • Psychology: MA, PhD, or PsyD (less research involved) • Related fields – Counseling, Social Work, etc

  4. Where do I get information • The Internet • Each graduate school has its own website • Recall: spend a lot of time on each site

  5. Where should I apply • As many places as you can • The acceptance rate is not high • More places > chance of acceptance • Recommended – away from undergraduate school • Outside of Canada

  6. What do I need to do to prepare for Grad school?

  7. Grades • A (B+) average last two years of your undergrad (last 60 credits) • Need to provide official university transcripts

  8. Graduate Registered Exams (GRE) • General and Subject • General – Reading, Writing, Arithmetic • Subject – overall understanding of psychology (3 times a year) • How to study: Guides • Computer assisted training

  9. Letters of reference • Most need 2 or 3 letters • Where to get them: Professors • Best references – people who have seen you do research • Honors thesis (4000 or 4170), volunteer

  10. Curriculum Vitae • Academic Resume • Research experience, special skills, field work, practical experience

  11. Cover Letter • Your only personal contact to the university • Statement of interest • Include names of professors • Be brief, avoid platitudes, different letter for each program

  12. Selection • Each program/university process different • Short list • Interview process

  13. How do I choose • First hand information • Ask graduate students in the program of interest • $$$
