Considerations • What are your long term educational and career goals? • Possible questions to ask yourself: • What level degree do you plan to complete? • How long is the program of study and how many credits have you completed towards this degree? • How long have you served on active duty? • How much longer will you remain on active duty?

  5. Considerations Continued • Take inventory of available financial resources: • Financial aid • VA education benefits • State Veteran assistance programs • Institutional Veteran assistance programs • Personal wealth • Evaluate program requirements and limitations.

Considerations Continued • What is the true value of your VA education benefit? • Factors affecting benefit value: • Length of active duty service • Enrollment status (full time vs. half time) • Current military status (active duty servicemember vs. Veteran) • Instructional method (online vs. classroom based) • Attendance at a public vs. private institution

Considerations Continued • Transfer of entitlement – initial transfer of entitlement must occur while on active duty; service requirements may apply • Do you meet eligibility requirements to transfer entitlement? • Does your dependent qualify for a VA education benefit independently? • What additional resources are available to your dependent? • Is your spouse also active duty and eligible to transfer education benefits? • Is it likely you will apply for a disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs?
