Socratic Seminar

This guide outlines the setup and expectations for conducting Socratic Seminars in the classroom. Students will be arranged in two circles and will switch places halfway through the discussion. The inner circle will focus on discussing given questions, citing text evidence, and listening actively. Meanwhile, those in the outer circle will take notes and maintain focus. The teacher’s main role is to facilitate and pose guiding questions. Key expectations include respect for opinions, open-mindedness, and the understanding that there are no right or wrong answers.

  2. Set-Up • When you walk in on a seminar day the class will be arranged in two circles (inside and outside). • Students will switch circles at the halfway point of the mod. • Inside • your responsibility is to discuss the questions that I give, citing evidence from the text to support your statements • While others are speaking you are to listen and not interrupt. • You may ask questions of others in the inner circle if it pertains to the discussion. • Please stick to the subject. • Outside • you’re to be actively listening by taking notes, looking up text references, and maintaining focus on the discussion.

  3. Teacher’s Role • The teacher’s main role is to listen. • The only time I will talk will be to pose questions, or to regain the focus of the discussion.

  4. Expectations • Respect the opinions of your peers • Keep an open mind • Suspend judgment • Do not get defensive—this is a discussion, not a debate • No interrupting • No sarcasm • Listen to others • There are no write or wrong answers • It is alright to change your mind on a topic
