  2. Supporting Writingin the Digital Age Marcia Obukowicz Cesa 9 marciao@newnorth.net Marciaoat.wikispaces.com

  3. Supporting writing in the digital age: Writing has become more than words on paper, it is a process for sharing what we know with others. Digital tools give us more options for making that process faster, easier, inclusive and collaborative. The audience for student work has moved beyond one teacher, it has the potential to go global! Picking the right support tools depends greatly on the environments we create, the tasks we ask students to complete and the tools we can provide. We will use a phenomenal concept known as SETT to explore ways to build a writing environment that supports the struggling writer along with tools that match the tasks they are being asked to perform. We will look at computer based, portable mobile BYOd, and iPad app options for supporting writing in 4 key areas: handwriting, note taking, finding and organizing information and sharing ideas, thoughts and content knowledge in a media form that fits the message.

  4. In the future

  5. The Task of Writing Changed • We still need words to convey a message.. • But how those words can be used, what media can support their understanding… • How we deliver them beyond paper and pencil … Changes with each minute.

  11. Struggling Writers • Lack a clear understanding of the purpose • Fail to have a plan for a composition • Lack strategies or procedures for generating and organizing ideas • Over rely on narrative or descriptive text structures – “knowledge telling” • Make more mechanical errors, with spelling errors the most frequent • Make more syntax errors • Show less word & sentence fluency • Correct only mechanical errors, but do poorly in identifying these errors • Do not have or sustain a plan for revising

  12. Struggling Writers • Do not see themselves as writers, therefore… Lack procedural knowledge about the writing process • Have difficulty selecting topics and generating ideas • Are unaware of writing for an audience • Write to put words on paper – not writing for meaning • Need strategies to self assess their own work
