  2. 1. A truck driver is attempting to deliver some furniture. First, he travels 8 km east, then he turns around & travels 3 km west. Finally, he turns again & travels 12 km east to his destination. a. What distance has the driver traveled? b. What is the driver’s total displacement? 8 km + 3 km + 12 km = 23 km 8 km - 3 km + 12 km = 17 km to east - 3 km west 8 km east 12 km west

  3. While following the directions on a treasure map, a pirate walks 45.0 m north, then turns & walks 7.5 m east. What single straight-line displacement could the pirate have taken to reach the treasure? 7.5 m E 45 m N

  4. 7.5 m E c2 = a2 + b2 45 m N c2 = (45m)2 + (7.5m)2 Θ c2 = 2025 m2 + 56 m2 c2 = 2081 m2 c = 45.6 m Θ = tan-1 opp adj = tan-1 7.5 m 45 m = 9.5 degrees east of north

  5. 3. Emily passes a soccer ball 6.0 m directly across the field to Kara. Kara then kicks the ball 14.5 m directly down the field to Luisa. What is the ball’s total displacement as it travels between Emily and Luisa? 14.5 m 6 m

  6. 14.5 m 6 m 67 o tan Θ = opp adj = 14.5 = 2.4167 6 c2 = a2 + b2 Tan-1 (2.4167) = 67o c2 = (6 m )2 + (14.5 m )2 c2 = 36 m2 + 210.25 m2 c2 = 246.25 m2 c = 15.7 m

  7. 4. A hummingbird, 3.4 m above the ground, flies 1.2 m along a straight path. Upon spotting a flower below, the hummingbird drops directly downward 1.4 m to hover in front of the flower. What is the humming-bird’s total displacement? 1.2 m 1.4 m 3.4 m

  8. 1.2 m 1.4 m 3.4 m tan Θ = opp adj = 1.4 = 1.167 1.2 c2 = a2 + b2 Tan -1(1.167) = 49 o below the horizontal c2 = (1.2 m)2 + (-1.4m)2 c2 = 1.4 m2 + 2 m 2 c2 = 3.4 m 2 c = 1.8 m
