Established in 1992 as the principal trade association for • European telecommunications operators. • 44 Members from 33 European countries, representing: • an aggregated turnover of more than 155,000 MEUROs • more than 265 million access lines • more than 1,100,000 employees • over 350 million customers Development of common policy positions. Co-operation and coordination of activities.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT We shall support Research and Development into the contribution new Telecommunications Services can make to Sustainable Development. • 71% of the Signatories integrate Environmental • Considerations in Innovative Activities • (including European R&D Programs) • 29% of the Signatories integrate • Environmental Considerations in Marketing • 33% of the Signatories integrate Environmental • Considerations in Sponsorship

Future initiatives toward IST Program • Reflecting medium terms business operations, Telecom Italia will invest in projects according to the 5 mentioned objectives • 1) Environmental monitoring systems (for instance: air quality forecasting systems available trough “ remotised” common servers • 2) New systems for dissemination to the general public (WAP, UMTS) • 3) Integration of environmental information with other public services • 4) applications for European Environmental networks (based on EIONET) • 5) Innovative Satellite services from Telespazio • Good opportunities from IST programs in “Services for citizens” even if under represented in terms of resources (11 to1 as success ratio) • Critical aspect for large industries in IST proposals: • the “innovation factor” is treated only as technological innovation • casual distribution of expertise during evaluation process • actual evaluation procedures are favouring simple projects, because of lack of time available by the evaluators for complex industrial projects
