NEW HIV INFECTIONS MAY BE DOWN BUT NOT GONE !
GETTING TO ZERO – HOW FAR OFF ARE WE ? ZERO new infections ? There are still 1233 per day = half a million per year ! ZERO AIDS related deaths ? There are still 487 per day = 178 000 per year
Observations and trends over the last 11 years • HIV prevalence in women has increased to nearly 1 in 5 womenhaving HIV • HIV prevalence in the youth 15 -24 is declining • The adult working population has the highest prevalence of HIV • Overall the percentage of the population with HIV 1 in 10 and increased over 11 years. • The number of people living with HIV is 5.26 million - 31.5% more than 2002 • New incidence new adult infection has declined from 1.26 of the population to .85% • New HIV infections per day down from 1600 to1233 per day - still half a million a year ! • AIDS deaths down from 345 000 to 178 000 per year - possibly anti - retro virals
