  2. Communism • Arms Race Begins in 1949 when the Soviet test the 1st atomic bomb. • China turns communist!! U.S feels as if they are losing the Cold War.

  3. How did U.S. plan to fight against Communism? • Policy of Containment- Stop the spread of communism. • U.S. won’t let another country fall to communism!

  4. 1st “hot War” in Cold War • Fear of communism increases when Communist North Korea invades Democratic South Korea…known as the KOREAN WAR!

  5. Japan had conquered Korea before WWII

  6. REVIEW of Korea after WWII • Korea is divided between the two hero's of WWII,--USA and USSR • Two zones on the 38th Parallel. North controls Soviet Union and US controls the South. • Stalin established a communist government in the North.

  8. Two Zones in Korea • Soviets set up a communist style government in the North. • New Leader of North Korea, Communist beliefs.. KIM Il Sung • Soviets help Kim Il Sung to POWER!!!!!!!!

  9. Time for Soviets and U.S. to leave Korea… • In 1949 both Soviets and US plan to leave Korea BUT North Korea invades South Korea, wanting to UNITE the country under COMMUNIST rule.

  10. Why did America get involved in Korea? • Policy of Containment!!!

  11. Who was the American General during the war? <- - -Douglas MacArthur

  12. Why did China get involved? • Early in the war, General MacAurther was winning and continues to push the troops into North Korea over the 38th Parallel! • Chinese leader is worried that America may invade China. -Mao Zedong

  13. How does China involvement change the war? • Chinese troops swarmed across the border of the Yalu River, driving the Americans back all the way back to the 38th Parallel .

  14. How did the Korean War end? • A ceasefire stopped the fighting on July 27, 1953. The war is considered to have ended at this point, even though there was no peace treaty.

  16. Deaths toll Korean War • 1.5 million Korean and Chinese Dead.58 thousand American Soldiers

  17. Korean War never officially ended! • Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ zone set up), is the buffer zone between North and South Korea. Troops are still on both sides of 38th par. including American troops.

  19. The Korean War sparks the Red Scare in America • Fear of Communism and nuclear weapons.

  20. Isolation of North Korea • North Korea CUT’s itself off from the rest of the World after the Korean War. One of the world's most secretive societies, relies on self-reliance. Communist to this day.

  21. What happened to D. MacAurther? • MacArthur WAS BLAMED for China for entering the war. Truman fired him for insubordination! • MacArthur was removed from command in April 1951 and forced to retire.
