eucen - European Association for University Continuing Education Network

eucen is a European association dedicated to the promotion and advancement of lifelong learning within higher education institutions. They initiate dialogue, produce new knowledge, and contribute to European policy development. They organize conferences, seminars, and projects to address various topics of interest in continuing education.

About eucen eucen as Association… • eucen - European university continuing education network, is an Association (not-for-profit) legally established under Belgium law – founded in 1991 informally by 15 universities and officially registered in 1994 • eucen Secretariat is located in Barcelona (ES) since 2000 • eucen has currently 185 members (institutional membership) from 34 countries including 17 National ULLL Networks • eucen’s mission: the promotion and advancement of LLL within Higher Education Institutions in Europe and elsewhere; to foster universities’ influence in the development of LLL knowledge and policies throughout Europe • Types of Membership: Full, Associate, Affiliate members

  3. eucen and Europe (i) The contribution of eucen at European level – Processes • Initiating and leading dialogue Practice, research and policy development in dialogue for innovation – giving support for institutional development of ULLL (e.g. strategy development, provision, quality, staff development…) • Producing and valorising new knowledge Collecting professional experience and knowledge, structure it, evaluate it, discuss it, enrich it and disseminate and valorise it. Main instrument: European projects, mainly with our members • Contributing to European Policy development Policy and position papers, contributions to debates, working groups, presentations at all levels – on-going feeding into policy development with different units of the European Commission (e.g. DG Employment with VET issues and Adult Learning issues) European Commission, other Stakeholders

  4. eucen and Europe (ii) The contribution of eucen at European level – Instruments • Annual European conferences and events • Spring Annual conference • Autumn Seminar: staff development event • Since 1991 there has been 47 conferences with about 4700 participants in 23 different countries; Proceedings; Study visits in 12 different countries • EU projects since 2001 • eucen has been contractor of 20 EU projects, and coordinator of 3 other projects for third parties • eucen has supported 34 projects of members through experts, evaluators, as dissemination expert, etc • eucen has managed project funds of over 9 million € • Collaboration with National ULLL Networks (NN) • Exchange of information, feeding into the European debate • eucen Conferences with theme of European/national relevance • Strengthening the NNs for ULLL to improve their roles

Current Activities (i) eucen projects • Current Projects: • COMMIT – Committing to the Social Dimension in universities (Oct’13 – May’16): Tools and events for HEIs to review and enhance their policies on SD through ULLL http://commit.eucen.eu • HE4u2 – Integrating Cultural Diversity in Higher Education (Jan’16 - Dec‘18): Integration of an innovative approach in existing curricula; creation of guidelines for HE staff; Design of a CPD course for HE staff; policy paper and recommendations http://www.eucen.eu • Proposal in the pipeline: • RAMSEs – Refining Apprenticeship in Medium and Small Enterprises(decision expected in July 2016): Extensive peer learning ‘HEIs-SMEs-potential apprentices’; training of supervisors model; policy paper and recommendations • http://www.eucen.eu
