Pablo Picasso • 1881-1973 • Full name is Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Picasso Ruíz. • Father was a small time painter. • Began training as a painter at age 7.
Age 13 Picasso surpasses his father and father no longer paints. He puts all his time in developing Pablo’s talent. • Attended the Royal Academy of San Fernando – an art school equivalent to the Italian school of Saint Luke. • Picasso disliked taking orders so he dropped out. • Was extremely fascinated with works by El Greco. • Travels to Paris (The center for all art movements.)
Gertrude Stein begins collecting Picasso works in 1905. He was 24. Stein is a very rich American family with both star and political influences. • Henri Matisse was Picasso’s friend and greatest art rival. • Picasso married twice and had many mistresses. • Paints Guernica as a reminder of the horrors of war. (WWII) • Member of the Communist party.
Styles • Painted with pastels and oils, typically on cardboard and wood, in his early years. • Developed the style of Cubism. • Cubism takes ordinary pictures and turns them into geometric shapes thus allowing the viewer to see the figure from multiple angles. • Dabbles in Surrealism. • Surrealism – dream-like characteristics. Shock art (What can I do to draw interest?)
3 major periods • Blue period – paints in all blues to express his depression over the death of his friend. • Rose period – Either roses or a rose color. Represents a state of mind that has turned from depression to a state of joy. • Cubism – art form based on geometrical shapes.
