  1. Výukový materiál zpracován v rámci projektu EU peníze školám

  2. Past tensesrevision ( Past simple, past continuous, past perfect)

  3. We use the Past simple • to talk about situations which finished in the past (He soldhis car yesterday.) • to talk about events which happened in the past one after another (we often use past simple in stories) • Ann finished her homework and went to visit her friend.

  4. We use the Past Continuous • to describe actions in progress at a certain time in the past (They were waiting for us in front of the cinema.) • to talk about temporary situations in the past (At that time Bethany was studying law at Cambridge.) • to talk about situations in the past during which shorter events hapenned (for these we use past simple) (They were dancing when I came in.)

  5. We use the Past Perfect • we talk about the past events in non-chronological order (the Past Perfect is used to express an event. which happened before other past events) (On the way to school I remembered that I had left my history book at home.)

  6. Complete the text with a suitable past tense form of the verbs • I had a terrible night! I(1) ……………………(spend) half of it at accident and emergency! I (2)………………………….(walk) home when right in front of me a group of men tried to cross the road. They (3)…….…………..(drink)before • and completely missed the car that was speeding towards them – until it was too late! They (4)…………………………(run) towards us and knocked my friend over so hard that she keeled over, bumped her head and passed out! When she (5)…………..(come)round, she said she (6)………………….(.can not) see properly, so I – the boys hadn´t even stopped—decided to take her to hospital. Better safe than sorry! Itwas touchand go for a while but we finally got there……………
