  3. Partnerships • College of Education-Technology Education • North Carolina Solar Center-College of Engineering • Funded by North Carolina State University Extension, Engagement, and Economic Development

  4. North Carolina Solar Center • Engineering, Policy, Training, Clean Transportation, Biofuels, CHP/HVAC, Energy Efficiency, Green Building, and K-20 Education • Industrial and Residential • Photovoltaic • Wind • Solar Thermal • Geothermal • Alternative transportation • Biofuels

  5. K-20 Programs • Junior Solar Sprint-middle school • Students Making Advancements in Renewable Transportation Technologies (SMARTT) Challenge-high school • North Carolina Sustainable Building Design Competition (community colleges and universities) • Green workforce development with community colleges • Green Research for Incorporating Data into the Classroom (GRIDc) • NC State EcoCAR Team • Fall 2009-Renewable Energy Graduate Online course through Tech Ed program

  6. Introduction to Project • Funded internally by NC State-Extension, Engagement, and Economic Development • Service, outreach, economic development, and involving students from the university • Website at NC Solar Center was outdated • Grant provided resources to develop a new website involving students

  7. Website • The Solar House-from physical to virtual • The green robotic wolf • Students learning about the Solar House and Solar Center resources • Educators have resources in one place • Students can tour the virtual Solar House if there are barriers to travel to NC State

  8. Photos

  9. Training roof

  10. Screenshot of 2D House

  11. Green Robotic Wolf

  12. Status of project • Developing the virtual house with hotspots which will be piloted in 30 days • Resources are being uploaded to new template

  13. Pre and post survey

  14. Stand-alone PV system • Telecommunication stations • Water pumping station • Cabins and other remote areas

  15. Terminology • Volt-unit of electrical pressure that causes electrons to flow through a wire. • Amp-unit of electrical current flowing through a wire. • Amp-hour-One amp of current flowing for one hour (used when describing battery capacity). • Watt-unit of electrical power equivalent to a current of one amp under a pressure of one volt-rate at which an appliance uses electrical energy.

  16. Series Circuits • Voltage increased • Positive to Negative

  17. Parallel Circuits • Amps increased • Positive to positive and negative to negative • Batteries connected in parallel to increase total amp hours for storage capacity and prolong operating time

  18. How many batteries? • Inverter efficiency of 90% • 4 Days of Autonomy • 50% discharge limit and battery XYZ which is a 6V battery with C/20 battery capacity of 350Ah

  19. How many PV modules • Battery efficiency at 80% • Peak sun hours/day for San Antonio, TX at 4.1 (Array set at latitude and no back up source) System specifications- Peak Amp of 5.02 Short circuit current 5.34 amps

  20. Pilots • Gathering data with students and teachers

  21. Questions • Dr. Joe Busby • joe_busby@ncsu.edu • Dr. Pam Carpenter pam_carpenter@ncsu.edu.
