  2. A positive number is written in scientific notation if it is written as the product of a number, b, where 1 ≤ b < 10 and an integer power, r , of 10.

  3. Writing a number in scientific notation • Move the decimal point to the left or right of the orginal number to make the new number between 1 and 10 • Example: 234,300,000 • New Number: 2.343

  4. Count the number of decimal places the decimal point is moved. • If you move to the left, the exponent is positive • If you move to the right, the exponent is negative

  5. Write you answer as a product 2.343 X 10⁸ Examples: • 0.0002532 • 3029 • 0.0010301 • 9

  6. Scientifc Notation to Standard Notation • Looking at your exponent decide if you are moving the decimal left or right • If the exponent is negative you move left • If the exponent is positive you move right 4.029 x 10⁸ Answer: 402,900,000
