  1. From Keywords Glossary to a Key Terms Pick list? Proposal for a new approach towards the use of keywords in Naaya toolkit based Biodiversity CHM portals

  2. Background • Current glossary is an earlier EEA glossary and not specifically chosen for the CHM toolkit • Two earlier discussions on this subject: in 2007 an extended list was presented, in 2008 we discussed the glossary in relationship to syndication among CHM portals.

  3. Possible purposes of the use of a keywords glossary • Providing end users of our Biodiversity CHM portals with definitions of terms: Not very feasible • Enhance a well designed exchange and aggregation of information between and from the national CHM portals: key terms pick list!

Key Terms Pick list? • A list of meaningful themes and terms (rather than single words) • Consequently used in the keywords field of all content (Tag) • Enhances the possibility to effectively filter and aggregate information from our portals (e.g. in the form of feeds, on maps (layers), in search operations) • Provide the end users with the same list to perform search operations

  5. Requirements to the list • Concise (to support consequent usage) • Commonly approved among managers of biodiversity portals (in order to be able to link information) • Translated into different languages (in order to support a network search, and for syndication purposes)

  6. Relevancy of aggregating information in relation to CBD implementation • Key challenge in the implementation of biodiversity policy: information about progress (Indicators) • Our portals can support the aggregation of data needed for this. • Use CBD focal area’s and headline indicators

  7. Proposal • Based upon the CBD focal area’s and headline indicators • Some additions derived from the European SEBI 2010 process (SEBI = Streamlining European Biodiversity Indicators) • Two levels (themes and terms)

  8. Technical improvements? • Picking of key terms may also be made more accessible by suggesting the terms and expressions on the "keywords” fields based on the first typed letters (of the words in boldface). • (Such approach could also be chosen for the geographical keywords)

  9. Further steps • Consultation in order to ensure the principal of a “commonly approved” list • Translation of the themes and terms • Technical adjustments • (Organisation of translations and technical improvements are being accounted for in the running EEA-CHM work plan.)
