  1. Planet Bean make it count By: Martin Chidwick

  2. Passionate about Pulses Brazen lover of Beans

  3. How do I present todays report in light of the ever escalating transparency of market information and ever increasing understanding of Thomas Friedmans book "The World Is Flat". What is different this year, to the presentation I gave last year, at about this time? Are we humbled yet by the pace of change and the extraordinary reality of demographic changes in this "flat" world ??

  4. Are we asking why forecasters and economists can be so far wrong? • The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries assumptions • for forecasts are confounded by speed of change, so much so that the next outlook, 2007-2016, is very • thought provoking (see a little later in this presentation some samples of what I mean..........) • Do we know that international law recognizes that everyone has the right to be free from hunger, and 22 countries have enshrined food rights in their constitutions (including the burgeoning economy of India**)?.This last fact is absolutely critical for our industry.

  5. Are you aware that the world's cattle consume a quantity of food equal to the caloric value of 8.7 billion people? More than the entire population of the planet. That 80% of agricultural land in USA is used to raise animals for food. That it takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of meat and only 60 gallons to produce 1 pound of wheat. Did you know that in the USA alone; 392,000 ounces (87,000lbs) per second, or 3,409,344 million tonnes of animal excrement are created per day (no wonder they need so much water)? Much of this enters our rivers and streams!

  6. Each vegetarian saves an acre of trees per year. MESSAGE TO WORLD  - EAT PULSES , EAT BEANS - GET YOU PROTEIN CHARGE FROM A GREEN SOURCE!! In the last year, over 101 million people have been added to the worlds population.....!! If they consumed just 2 "miserable" (as in tiny amount) pounds of beans per year each, just 2, then we would have a new demand for over 9 million cwt!!  Trivia question - "What is the number one new baby boys name in England right now?". Behind the Back Curveball

  7. OECD-FAO AGRICULTURAL OUTLOOK 2007 - 2016 contains these words Measured by global imports, world trade is projected to grow for all commodities reviewed in this report , without exception. By 2016, and compared to the average for 2001-05,trade expansion remains modest for SMP (7%), is situated at 13%-17% for coarse grains and wheat respectively, but grows by between over 50% for beef, pigmeat** ( EAT PULSES, EAT BEANS-GET YOUR PROTEIN CHARGE FROM A GREEN SOURCE!! )and WMP and by close to 70% for vegetable  oils.

  8. Doesn’t this all excite you??!! What are we doing to position ourselves and take our place in the growing demand! Health and nutrition are paramount, but what else our we missing...??

  9. Parallel India's emergence with that of China, and especially in light of the book published in 1995..."Who is going to feed China? "The projections for meat consumption then were borne out by reality, 10 years later. It is largely a result more income and better eating....In India the higher the income the higher the consumption for pulses. Remember this is largely a vegetarian society! • What do the numbers 215, 235, 270, 305, 335, 360, 390 and 402 mean to you? • What does the number 925 mean to you? ( See a little later what the number 31829 will mean to you!!.........)

  10. We consume in N. America 35% of the worlds fossil fuels and then we tell the emerging markets to watch for greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment!!

  11. 3 billion emerging capitalists auto industry is spending $300 million dollars on researching better eating and drinking stations in our SUV's.....er Sorry, I mean hybrid Hummers..... the rice industry took uncooked rice from 15 minutes on the stove to 3 minutes, while we are still 8 hours just soaking our uncooked beans!!

  28. III. An Outlook of Chinese Pulses Industry in 2007/2008 • At present, ever-increasing requirement for pulses export quality drives many people in Chinese pulses industry to expand input in warehouses, processing factories and equipment. 29. III. An Outlook of Chinese Pulses Industry in 2007/2008 • Secondly, with the rise of Chinese labor cost, people tend to transfer processing facilities to origins in order to lower the cost.
