About the Author • Lemony Snicket’s real name is actually Daniel Handler, and he was born on February 28, 1970. • He was engaged to a women named Beatrice. She got remarried and changed her last name to Baudelaire and had Violet, Klaus, and Sunny ( they are actually real people), who are the main characters in the book. Beatrice died in a house fire and no one knows where Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are. • Along with other adult books, he wrote the thirteen book series, The series of Unfortunate Events.
Setting • Violet, Klaus, and Sunny live at the Lucky Smells Lumbermill. • The only other location where the story takes place is the Dr. Orwell’s office. She is the optometrist who hypnotizes Klaus and helps Count Olaf or Shirley. • The town that these places are located in, Paltryville, has a lot of trees and is basically a forest.
Characters • Violet Baudelaire, who is fourteen, is an inventive and resourceful young girl. She will do anything for her siblings Klaus and Sunny. • Klaus Baudelaire, who is twelve, loves to do research on random subjects. This becomes very helpful throughout the series. • Sunny Baudelaire, who is an infant, loves to bite and chew on hard objects. • Shirley, who is Dr. Orwell’s receptionist and who Count Olaf pretends to be, is once again trying to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune. • Forman Flacutono, who is not only terrible foreman, helps Count Olaf try to steal their fortune. • Sir is the Baudelaire’s legal guardian. His name is so complicated they just call him Sir.
Plot • Violet, Sunny, and Klaus are forced to work at the Lucky Smells Lumber mill. Sir, who is supposed to be their guardian, makes them a deal: He will protect them from Count Olaf, but they must work at the lumber mill and are not supposed to cause any trouble. • Forman Flacutono, who works for Count Olaf, trips Klaus so that his glasses break, and he has to go see Dr. Orwell. She hypnotizes Klaus so that he causes a big accident at work, breaks one of the machines, and hurts one of the employees. • Sir makes them leave at the end because he says they broke their end of the deal.
Conflict/Resolution • The conflict of the story, which is almost the same for the whole series, is that Count Olaf finds them wherever they go. • There is not really a resolution, because Count Olaf runs away at the end of this book, but the Baudelaire children do find out that Dr. Orwell was Count Olaf.
Theme • The theme is that people need to show you that you can trust them and you should always stay with the ones you love. • These themes represent the story, because Violet, Klaus, and Sunny always work together and trust each other. They would do anything to make sure they are all safe and okay.
Personal Book Review I really liked The Miserable Mill. Like all the books in the series, it is very interesting and it makes you want to keep reading. I really didn’t much like to read before I discovered this series. I much recommend it to both boys and girls. It is filled with so much adventure!
