  1. What are the 2 major climate regions?

  2. 4 major vegetation regions that run east to west

  3. What North American Country has climates and vegetation regions similar to those in Russia and the Republics? Why are they similar?

  4. Answer • Canada has similar climate and vegetation regions as Russia • Because they are located in the same latitude

  5. Major Climate Regions • Humid continental and subarctic climates dominate Russia. Influencing these climates is the regions high latitude and the impact of the wall of mountains in the southeast. Much of the region is hundreds of miles from the moderating influence of the sea.

  6. Continentality • The effect of this distance on climate is called Continentality. • Affects the amount of precipitation a region gets and results in extreme temperatures. • Temperatures are consistently low that the region has permafrost that reaches as deep as 1500 feet.

  7. Tundra • Falls mostly in the artic climate zone • Mosses, Lichens, Small herbs and low shrubs are the only types of vegetation that are able to survive in the polar conditions

  8. Forests • Lies south of the Tundra and is the largest forest on Earth – called the Tiaga • Contains primarily coniferous trees and fur-bearing animals • Further south, deciduous trees mix with coniferous. • Lower latitudes – deciduous tress become dormant.

  9. Steppe • Name of the temperate grassland that extends from Southern Ukraine through Northern Kazakhstan to the Altay Mountains. • Chernozem soil is found there and helps make the area a major source of grain for Russia and the Republics.

  10. Desert • Deserts, along with semiarid lands, occupy the wide plains in the west and the central areas of Central Asia. • Two main deserts: • Kara Kum • Kyzyl Kum • Together they occupy 230,000 square miles • Efforts to irrigate these regions resulted in one of the worlds greatest environmental catastrophes
