Exploring Parallels in Vertical Integration: Insights from the 2011 Aqua-Feed Conference

This document delves into the parallels found in the aquaculture industry, drawing insights from the 2011 Ridley Aqua-Feed Prawn & Barramundi Conference held in Sydney. It discusses vertical integration's role in the industry, covering how integrators and processors maintain control through ownership and contracts, ranging from genetics to marketing. Key aspects include the responsibilities of contract growers, cost management, and the importance of feed formulation in optimizing growth and yield. The insights presented underline the complex dynamics of aquaculture production and the need for innovation.

  1. What do the figures hid Feathers and scales: There are Parallels For the 2011 Ridley Aqua-Feed Prawn & Barramundi Conference 3rd – 5th August 2011 Darling Harbour, Sydney NSW

  2. Vertical Integration • Integrator/Processor controls chain through direct ownership or contractors. • Genetics through to distribution • Processor supplies day-old chickens, feed, technical advice and pickup of birds for processing. • Contract growers provide 45% of the capital for shedding and land to grow birds to market age. • Growers also resposible for energy costs (gas and electricity) and management.

  3. Vertical Integration • Genetics – Ability to fairly rapidly change genetics. Target specific characteristics. • Feed Conversion • Growth rate • Yield • Anatomical factors.

  4. Vertigal Integration • Control over feed formulation (own mill or custom ) • Marketing • Financial investment – share the risk • . • On Farm Systems QA
