Internet & The Web Basics • What is the Internet? • A vast array of networks that belong to universities, businesses, organizations, governments, and individuals all over the world! • What is the World Wide Web (www)? • One of many services of the Internet • Other Internet services: email, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and instant messaging • What is needed to view web pages? • Web browsers (Internet Explorer, Sarfari, Chrome, Firefox) • Web content usually includes text, images, and multimedia files • Each page has a unique address known as a Uniform Resource Locater (URL) • What is a Web Site? • A collection of linked web pages • First thing you see ~ usually called the “home page” • Provides hyperlinks to navigate to other pages within the site or to external sites • What is a hyperlink? Text or an image that when clicked takes the user to another page, another location on the same page, another web site OR to a specific file

  3. What Makes a Web Page? HTML Hypertext Markup Language XHTML Extensible Hypertext Markup Language A more efficient and strict version of HTML. Doesn’t allow tags or attributes that isn’t supported across all browsers. Dreamweaver CS5 builds web pages with XHMTL code by default Do you need to know XHTML to create web pages? Not if using Dreamweaver CS5! WYSIWYG! • A language that enables you to structure and present your web site’s content
