  4. What Is The Godhead? • “Godhead” – Col. 2:9 • theotes: Godhood, the state, dignity, condition, quality of being God. • When we speak of the Godhead we are speaking of that which has Divine nature—Deity. • We must seek to understand who has that divine nature.

Introduction to the Godhead • We are first introduced to the idea of the Godhead in the beginning. • Gen. 1:26, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our own image…’” • God—Elohiym: Plural of El: exceeding, great, majesty—God. • Therefore, God (plural) said “Us.” • The plural is often used to emphasize majesty, but in reference to God there is more to it.

Introduction to the Godhead • John 1:1 Parallels Gen. 1. • “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” • It shows “God” as including more than one person. • The Word was both with God and He Himself was God. • As God, the Word was the prime agent in the creation: John 1:3

Introduction to the Godhead • This plurality of persons is not unique to the New Testament. • Isa. 44:6: “…the Lord the King of Israel, and His Redeemer, the Lord of Hosts…beside Me there is no God.” • Isa. 44:24: “…the Lord, your Redeemer, and He who formed you from the womb, I am the Lord, who makes all things…” • Isa. 48:13, 16: “…My hand has laid the foundation of the earth…I have not spoken in secret from the beginning…I was there. And now the Lord God and His Spirit have sent Me.”

Who is Godhead? • We know there is more than one person in the Godhead—but who are they? • John 1:1: The Word was with God and was God. • The Word created all things: John 1:3 • The Word became flesh: John 1:14 • John saw Jesus…“The Lamb of God who takes away sins.”: John 1:29—Jesus is the Word who created all things, who became flesh, who is God. • Col. 1:16: Jesus created all things.

  9. Who is Godhead? • John 1:1: The Word was God. • Who was He with in the Beginning? • John 1:14: The Word was begotten of the Father • The Father is another name for God Jesus

  12. Three Persons in the Scriptures • Gen. 1:2, 26; John 1:1; John 14:26. • Isa. 48:12, 16: The Creator, who has spoken from the beginning, said, “the Lord God and His Spirit Have sent Me.”

The Unity of the Godhead “If there are three, how can they be one God?” • Deut. 6:4: “Jehovah our God is one Jehovah (ASV). • Jehovah is “self-existant, eternal” i.e. I AM. • God is elohim (plural as in Gen. 1:26) • One is echad – one or unified. • Gen. 1:5: morning and evening make one day. • Gen. 2:24: two become one flesh. • Judges 20:8: people arose as one man.

  17. The Unity of the Godhead “If there are three, how can they be one God?” Just as a man and a woman make one flesh, the Godhead is one eternal God. Just as a morning and an evening make up one day, the Godhead is one eternal God.

  18. The Unity of the Godhead The Godhead forms a united one. The Father and the Son • John 10:30: “I and My Father are one.” • John 5:30: “…I do not seek to do My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.” • John 6:38: “I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” • John 12:50: “…whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.” • John 17:22: “That they may be one just as We are one.”

  19. The Unity of the Godhead The Godhead forms a united one. The Son and the Holy Spirit • John 14:26: “He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” • John 16:14: “He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” • Rom. 8:26: They work together to make intercession for us.

  20. The Unity of the Godhead The Godhead forms a united one. All Three • Matt. 28:19: All three persons bear the same authority. • “In the name of” means by their authority. • Acts 2:38: “In the name of Jesus Christ” carried the same weight as all three persons. • John 16:14-15: They are unified in will and purpose. • 1 Cor. 2:10: The Holy Spirit reveals the deep things of God—also referred to as “the mind of Christ” (2:16).
