  1. Article of the Week A weekly assignment in language arts!

  2. What is Article of the Week? At the beginning of each week, you will receive an article to read. You will read the article, annotate the article, and write a reflection. Both the annotated article and written reflection is always due on Friday.

  3. Annotating • Active readers annotate the texts they are reading. • Annotate simply means to take notes on your text. • Annotating helps you: • Stay focused while you read. • Involve you with your text. • Monitor and improve your comprehension.

  4. What will I need? Since you are writing on your text, you will need a pencil or a pen. No highlighters!

  5. How to annotate • Underline important terms. • Circle definitions and meanings. • Write key words and definitions in the margin. • Signal where important information can be found with key words or symbols in the margin. • Write short summaries in the margin at the end of a chunk of text.

  6. How to annotate • Write the questions in the margin next to the section where the answer is found. • Indicate steps in a process by using numbers in the margin. • Add comments about connections you have to the text, questions you have, and any ideas that occur to you. • Draw a picture as a visual reference for what is being discussed in the text.

  7. Turning in the AOW • On Fridays, you will submit the annotated article and staple your one-page reflection to the AOW. • Checking your annotations • How much did you write on the text? • How much thinking is shown in the annotating? • Checking your reflection • Did you write a full page? • Does your reflection show complex consideration of the topics/issues in the article? • Is the reflection nothing but a summary?

  8. Turning in your AOW • As a general rule: • The more writing on the text and and in the margins, the better the grade. • Neatness counts! If I can’t read your annotating, then there is a problem. • Use a pencil or pen. No highlighters!

  9. What can bring my AOW grade down? • Not bothering to turn it in. • Turn in a weak product that is barely annotated. • Why bother doing anything if you don’t put forth your best effort? • Do only one part of the AOW. • Turning in summaries rather than reflections. • Turning in a reflection that is less than one page.

  10. Reflections • Some ideas for reflection: • Refer to some questions, comments, or connections that you annotated in the margins. • Pick a powerful quote from the article and explain why you connected with that quote. • Your stance on the article. Do you agree or disagree with the author? • Your favorite part of the article with an explanation of why you liked it.

  11. Reflections • Some ideas for reflection: • Explore some of the questions raised by the article. • What else does the article relate to? Have you heard anything like this before? • Make a personal connection to the article. What if this happened to you or someone you know? • Could the topic of this article be important to our community, society, or population?
