This presentation, led by Jeon Ji-hoon, explores the comprehensive evolution of wireless communications into 4G technology. While no formal definition exists, key objectives include offering fully IP-based systems, achieving indoor and outdoor speeds between 100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s, and supporting a variety of multimedia services on a seamless, global network. The talk delves into principal technologies like OFDM and MIMO, highlights the advantages of 4G such as high speeds and multimedia support, and discusses the challenges related to infrastructure costs and IP requirements.

What is 4G? (1/3) • The next complete evolution in wireless communications • SBI2K(Systems Beyond IMT 2000) • ITU(International Telecommunication Union)의 국제 표준화 기구
What is 4G? (2/3) • No formal definition for what 4G is • Certain objectives that are projected for 4G • Fully IP-based integrated system • Capable of providing between 100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s speeds both indoors and outdoors, with premium quality and high security
What is 4G? (3/3) • A 4G system will be able to provide • a comprehensive IP solution • Voice, data and streamed multimedia can be given to users on an "Anytime, Anywhere" basis • Higher data rates than previous generations
Objectives of the 4G standard (1/3) • A spectrally efficient system • High network capacity • more simultaneous users per cell • A nominal data rate of 100 Mbit/s while the client physically moves at high speeds relative to the station, and 1 Gbit/s while client and station are in relatively fixed positions
Objectives of the 4G standard (2/3) • A data rate of at least 100 Mbit/s between any two points in the world • Smooth handoff across heterogeneous networks • Seamless connectivity and global roaming across multiple networks
Objectives of the 4G standard (3/3) • High quality of service for next generation multimedia support • real time audio, high speed data, HDTV video content, mobile TV, etc • Interoperability with existing wireless standards • An all IP, packet switched network • the infrastructure for 4G will be only packet-based
Principal technologies (1/2) • Baseband techniques • OFDM(Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) : To exploit the frequency selective channel property • MIMO(multiple-input and multiple-output) : To attain ultra high spectral efficiency • Turbo principle : To minimize the required SNR(Signal-to-noise ratio) at the reception side
Principal technologies (2/2) • Adaptive radio interface • Modulation, spatial processing including multi-antenna and multi-user MIMO • Relaying, including fixed relay networks (FRNs), and the cooperative relaying concept, known as multi-mode protocol
Future of 4G (1/2) • Standards of 4G technologies • Mobile WiMax Evolution : 우리나라 주도, data 전송에 유리 • 3GPP Long Term Evolution : 유럽 주도, 세계 이동통신 시장을 장악하고 있는 (W-CDMA) 서비스를 기반으로 함 • 3GPP2 Ultra Mobile Broadband : 퀄컴 주도, 동기식인 EVDO 기술의 차세대 버전
Future of 4G (3/3) • Disadvantages • 구축 비용 : 3G에서 4G로 넘어가기 위해 필요한 네트워크 장비의 교체 등 • IP의 확보 : Fully IP-based integrated system이므로 충분한 수의 IP 필요 – IPv6
