  1. The Ultimate DIY Guide for Painting Your Home Interior A good paint job can transform the look and feel of your home. However, it will also cost you an arm and a leg since you’ll need to purchase expensive materials and hire a contractor. So, why don’t you just do it yourself? Unfortunately, many people fear that they could mess things up! And that’s probably why we keep putting off the paint job. But, with the right guidance, anyone can do an excellent DIY paint job. Read this guide, and you’ll not need to hire a contractor for a paint job at your home. Purchase Materials If you are wondering what the first step is or how to paint a house interior, it’s rather obvious. Start by ensuring that you have everything you require is close you. Go shopping for stuff and take a friend with you. You’ll get invaluable advice and your friend can help you make a choice on the paint color combinations that would suit your home. Protect the Furniture and Floor Start by protecting the furniture and floor. Here, you can opt for canvas or plastic sheets. Plastic is much cheaper and easy to handle. However, a canvas sheet is a better buy. First, it’s durable and is easily storable (you’ll use it for future paint jobs); it also absorbs paint drops rather than smudge them. Thus canvas minimizes the hazard of slipping or tripping. Prep the Walls and Other Surfaces A great DIY paint job starts with a thorough prep job. That means, you must fill and patch every hole or crack, and scrape, sand the surfaces to make them even. Also, you need to clean the house thoroughly to remove the cobwebs and other visible junk as well as the unseen layer of dust and soot. Tint the Primer Now that the materials are home and the surfaces are prepped, tint the primer. The primer helps to cover up stains, helps you use less paint, and enhances paint adhesion.

  2. But you’ve got to do it like a pro. So, mix the primer with a little top coat paint to give it a tint of the final finished color. This way, you’ll only need to prime the tough areas only. But it also means more work for you especially if you need to paint different color combinations. Start Painting But Don’t Start with the Walls Once the primer sets, start the painting. A rule of thumb is spray paint only if you have a large expanse of a flat surface. Otherwise, just stick to rolling or the paintbrush. Start with the ceiling, and then move to the trims and the cut-ins. The trims and cut-ins will probably be of a different color, just to bring out your theme and paint color combinations. But, remember to use some tape to cover up sections of the walls and prevent spills. Nonetheless, you need not to worry about the walls. After all, you’re yet to paint them. Wrap-up by Painting the Walls The last step on how to paint a house interior or the last part of your DIY paint job, is to paint the walls. Use a roller and you’ll be done in no time. Just dip it in the paint, make sure the paint gets evenly over the entire surface, and roll it over the wall gently stroking it up and down. After you have finished, simply roll off the excess paint and tightly wrap it with a plastic cling film and store the roller.
