Goals for the Year • Increased Literacy: • Elevated reading comprehension • Elevated critical thinking skills (lots of “why?” “how?” and explaining!) • Elevated writing skills (organization, depth, length) • Improved Speaking and Listening: • Broaden vocabulary • Refine communication skills • Refine listening skills

  4. Overall Goal: • Prepare students for the upper grades by making them independent, critical thinkers, and learners!

Expectations of… me! • 100% effort at all times! • Open door policy and prompt communication! • Keep grades updated and posted weekly! • Motivator and encourager to create lifelong learners! • Supportive while creating independence! • Give students the skills and strategies they need to be successful! • Create a safe, productive, and fun learning environment!

  6. Expectations of Students • 100% effort at all times • Seek extra help when needed • Come to class prepared and ready to learn • Keep an open mind • Be honest • RESPECT- self, adults, and others

  7. Expectations of Parents • Facilitate independence • Encourage literacy • Encourage reading (ANYTHING!!!) • Read and comment on writing • Discuss school- ask for papers! • Check the website- homework & grades • Keep me posted on any questions, concerns, or issues!

Independent Reading • Reading that will be done in the students’ own time and independently • Every Thursday a Reading Log is due • 3-4 sentences summarizing what they read for the week • Students will have about a month, or a little more, to read each novel • In the end, we will do an in-class project based on their independent reading • Sometimes, I will tell them they need to be reading a specific genre.

  10. Grades • New grading scale: • 100-91 = A • 90-81 = B • 80-71 = C • 70-63 = D • 62-0 = F • Grades will be listed as numbers on the report card.

  11. Grades Continued • Can be accessed on PowerSchool • Updated once a week or after major tests, quizzes, or projects • Questions? Ask!
