  2. The effect of natto extract powder on whole blood viscosity and serum lipid in SD rats • Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) including brain vascular disease, heart disease, and hypertensive still occupy the 2nd, 3rd, and 10th causes of death in Taiwan. Arteriosclerosis results in coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. According to the epidemiological researches, Asian people have lower incidence of CVD due to the consumption of soybean relative food. Nattos contain Nattokinase (NK) which is highly fibrinolytic activity. The aim of this experiment is to evaluate the effects of CVD risk factors in vivo by measuring whole blood viscosity (WBV), serum lipid, liver lipid, and antioxidant activity. Seventy 6-week-old male SD rats were divided into 5 groups randomly. Negative control group fed normal diets, positive control and natto groups fed high fat/high cholesterol diets. Results showed change of Interleukin-6 (IL-6) decreased singnifantly in the group fed (31.26mg/day) Natto. The feed efficiency decreased singnifantly while the GSH/GSSG ratio positively correlated to the period of feeding time in the group fed (104.2mg/day) Natto. The liver TC decreased singnifantly in the group fed (31.26mg, 104.2mg/day)Natto. In this study, the consumption of non-purified natto extract decreased IL-6 and liver TC, which is helpful in preventing CVD.
