  4. Domestic Problems • Chernobyl Disaster • Nuclear Meltdown in Ukraine, then a Soviet Satellite. • Created a literal ghost town, estimated 4000 dead • Soviet Union Falls • Gorbachev’s reforms weaken USSR until collapse on Christmas of 1991

  5. Soviet Union Dominance Recedes All satellites withdrew from the union, the red was the USSR, which shrank to just Russia 20 different countries emerged After the Soviet Union split

  6. Aftermath • Communism lost the war to Capitalism • 20 new countries formed • Depression in Russia, but growth in all former USSR states by 1999 • USA emerges as the dominant world power
