Community-Based Focus Mission Addressing childhood obesity through a coordinated community-based approach targeting modifiable individual risk behaviors, environmental risk factors, and state and national risk reduction policies. Our approach is focused on food systems and sustainable agriculture strategies.

  4. Individual Risk Behaviors Dietary Intake • Increase fruits and vegetables: • Access • Amount and variety • Decrease foods high in fats and added sugars

  5. Individual Risk Behaviors Physical Activity • Increase physical activity: • Number of minutes spent in light, moderate, and vigorous activity • Types of physical activity: • Increase number of minutes spent in cardiovascular, bone strengthening, and muscle strengthening activity

  6. Environmental Risk Factors Neighborhood Food Density • Number of fast food and “eat-in” restaurants within prescribed radius of schools, homes • Number of grocery stores, convenience stores, “big box” stores within prescribed radius of schools, homes • Other food accessibility factors: - Presence of food pantries - Presence of farmer’s markets, cooperatives - Other food sources within prescribed area

Environmental Risk Factors Built Environment • Presence of sidewalks, bike lanes within prescribed radius of schools, homes • Number of parks, recreational facilities within prescribed radius of schools, homes • Distances between homes and schools; bussing • Other built environment factors: - Availability of school facilities (e.g. gym, playing fields, tracks, basketball courts) - Availability of public programs
