  2. What is in the Respiratory System? The respiratory system consists of these parts: Lungs, Trachea, Bronchi, Diaphragm, and the Bronchioles, alveoli, and the capillaries. .

  3. The respiratory system helps you breathe in and out. The air passes through your trachea, which is your windpipe. Then, it goes into your bronchi which is in your lungs. These little things called bronchioles branch off from your bronchi. On the end of each bronchioles is something called the alveoli. The alveoli are tiny sacs that allow oxygen to pass into your blood. The alveoli are surrounded by small blood vessels called capillaries. When the air escapes from you alveoli, the air goes into your capillaries .The capillaries goes directly to the heart, and then it reverses the order and comes out as carbon dioxide. What does the Respiratory system do for you?

  4. More in Depth: The Lungs The lungs take up most of the space in your chest. They are protected by the rib cage. The rib cage has 12 pairs of ribs. One lung is smaller than the other because there has to be room for the heart. The lung that is smaller is the left lung. You may have this question: How do the lungs move when you breathe in and out? Well, the lungs are covered in special layers called the pleural membranes. There are two membranes: the Visceral pleura and the Parietal pleura. These membranes are separated by a fluid that allows them to easily move when you inhale and exhale.

  5. The diaphragm is just bellow your lungs. When you breathe in with your lungs, you diaphragm contracts to make room for your lungs. When you exhale, the diaphragm goes back it’s regular size. The diaphragm separates your lungs from your stomach and intestines. More in depth: Diaphragm

  6. More in Depth: Bronchi and Bronchioles Bronchi: The bronchi are tubes that branch off from the trachea. They enter the lungs. The name for one of them is called the bronchus. Bronchioles: The bronchioles branch off from the bronchi. Each one is about as thick as one piece of hair! On the ends of each one is the alveoli, which we will learn about later.

  7. More in Depth: The Alveoli The alveoli are tiny sacs on the ends of each bronchioles. There are about 600,000,000 alveoli in your lungs! That’s enough to fit a whole tennis court. These alveoli have a single cell thick wall that allow them to pass oxygen to red blood cells. More in Depth: The Capillaries The capillaries are tiny blood vessels surrounding the alveoli. When the oxygen passes through the alveoli, it goes into the capillaries. The capillaries goes directly to the heart. The side of the heart that gets this blood is the left side. You can remember that by saying, “Left is for lungs.”

  8. Diseases with the Respiratory System One thing that can harm the respiratory system is smoking. Asthma can cause a hard time to breathe due to swelling of the bronchi and bronchioles, which can cause commotion with the airways. There is also lung cancer. It is usually associated with smoking but it can affect non-smokers as well. Like all of the cancers, it is caused by uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the meeting of three related conditions: chronic asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It is very progressive and it is difficult for sufferers to breathe.
