  2. Sexually Transmitted Diseases! Are not a joking matter! Have serious consequences! If You are a PLAYER? Then You are AT RISK!

  3. Facts about STDs • STDs = Sexually Transmitted Diseases • Acquired thru intimate sexual contact (vaginal, anal or oral sex) with infected person • Very contagious diseases • Not acquired from hugging

  4. Symptoms of STDs • May not have any! • Burning when urinating • Discharge from genitals • Sores, bumps, blisters in genital area • Itching in or around genitals • Bleeding or cramps (between periods)

  5. Not all STDshave sores that can be seen! It make take YEARS for symptoms to appear! If you’re sexually active , you’re at risk!

  6. Examples of STDs • Gonorrhea • Chlamydia • HIV and AIDS • Syphilis • Genital Herpes • Genital Warts

  7. Gonorrhea (“Clap”) Signs & Symptoms: • Discharge from genitals • Burning or pain with urination • Lower abdomen pain • Bleeding between periods • Swollen Bartholin’s Gland • Fever (late in disease)

  8. Gonorrhea (“Clap”) Complications: • Infertility • Urinary obstruction • Pharyngitis • Eye infection • Arthritis • Congestive Heart Failure • DEATH!

  9. STDs & Teens • Are you really at risk? • In 2002, Texas had over 35,000 cases of Gonorrhea & Chlamydia in kids under age 19! • If you are having sex…YES!

  10. Chlamydia Signs & Symptoms: • Sometimes none • Testicular or abdominal pain • Painful urination • Pain, burning or itching of genitals • Discharge from genitals • Swollen Bartholin’s Gland • Fever (late in disease)

  11. Chlamydia Complications: • Infertility • Eye infection • Arthritis • Liver problems • Heart problems • DEATH to fetus during pregnancy!

  12. Gonorrhea & Chlamydia • STDs are contageous! • Must tell your partner! • You must get treatment! • Partner must get treatment too!

  13. Syphilis Signs & Symptoms: • Painless chancre (ulcer) • Skin rash (hands & feet) • Multiple warty ulcers • Swollen inguinal glands • Hair loss • Flu-like symptoms • Continues to progress

  14. Syphilis Complications: • Damage to heart & brain, vision & hearing, bones & joints • CNS disease • Paralysis • Seizures • Mental changes!

  15. Abstinence = not having sex • Is the BEST Protection from STDs! • Is the BEST Gift you can give your future husband or wife!

  16. Genital Herpes Signs & Symptoms: • Painful sores (weep, scab over, heal) • Swollen glands • Low-grade fever • Body aches

  17. Genital Herpes Complications: • Contagious between outbreaks • Occurs again and again • Life-long infection • Pregnant women can pass to baby during delivery

  18. Sex+Alcohol+Drugs= A DANGEROUS COMBINATION!

  19. Condyloma (“Genital Warts”) Signs & Symptoms: • Warts on external genitalia, vagina, penis, anus • Warts on nose and mouth • Itching • Irritation • Bleeding

  21. HIV and AIDS Spread by: • Infected person • Thru sex, blood, needles or syringes • Drugs, piercings, tattoos THERE IS NO CURE FOR HIV OR AIDS!

  22. HIV and AIDS Signs & Symptoms: • Flu-like syndrome • Sometimes none • May look healthy & feel fine! • Weakens immune system • Body has no defense against disease & infection • DEATH!

  23. Prevention of STDs • Abstinence = 100% • ALWAYS use CONDOM! • Limit Number of Sex Partners • Don’t combine Drugs, Alcohol, Sex

  24. Concerned you might have an STD? • Tell Your Parents! • See a Doctor! • Go to County Health Clinic! Ask For Help ASAP!

  25. ABCs of STDs • A = ABSTINENCE = 100% protection! • B = BEST Protection is to PROTECT Yourself! • C = CONTAGEOUS with many complications: pain, arthritis, infertility, pregnancy problems, heart problems, cancer, DEATH!
