  1. Responding to God as Father

  2. Last month NASA released a high-magnification image of part of the night sky about this big in comparison with the moon

  3. To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal? Says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, And calls them each by name. - Isaiah 40:26-27

  4. He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, And its people are like grasshoppers Isaiah 40:22

  5. But I’m only 200 million times bigger than the microbes in my intestine, and the universe is about 50 million, million, million, million times bigger than me, and it contains about 10,000 million million million stars, each of which, Isaiah says, the Holy One calls out by name.

  6. But I’m only 200 million times bigger than the microbes in my intestine, and the universe, in which God calls out the stars by name, is about 50 million, million, million, million times bigger than me, and it contains about 10,000 million million million stars, each of which, Isaiah says, the Holy One calls out by name. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. - Matthew 10:29

  7. We’re totally insignificant compared with God Three BIG buts God created men and women in his own image (Gen 1:27) – so to a certain extent we can understand him Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden by Peter Wenzel, Vatican Museum.

  8. We’re totally insignificant compared with God But: He created men and women in his own image – so to a certain extent we can understand him Jesus shows us what God is like, and died so that we can come to him as sons John 14: 7-10; Hebrews 1: 3; John 1: 2, 14, 12. Not just ‘the Holy One, who calls out the stars by name’

  9. We’re totally insignificant compared with God But: He created men and women in his own image – so to a certain extent we can understand him Jesus shows us what God is like But it does show us that how we relate to God depends entirely on God I Peter 5:10 ‘The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory’

  10. So what does Jesus and the Bible show us about God the Father • He shows us: • Limitless love. Why should God care about us? But he does. • John 3: 16-18 Whoever believes… • Romans 8: 31-35; 38-39 Nothing in all creation…

  11. So what does Jesus and the Bible show us about God the Father • He shows us… • Limitless love. Why should God care about us, but he does. • Limitless knowledge. So we can be vulnerable. • Ps 139: 1-18.

  12. So what does Jesus and the Bible show us about God the Father • He shows us… • Limitless love. Why should God care about us, but he does. • Limitless knowledge. So we can be vulnerable. • Limitless faithfulness. God is a rock • Isaiah 54: 10, Though the mountains be shaken • And the hills be removed, • Yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken • Nor my covenant of peace be removed, • Says the Lord, who has compassion on you

  13. Ps 61:2 Lead me to the rock that is higher than I Most of us know what it is to be overwhelmed in heart; emptied as when a man wipes a dish and turns it upside down; submerged and thrown on our beam ends like a vessel mastered by the storm. Realisation of our own inward corruption will do this, if the Lord permits the great deep of our depravity to become clear to us. Disappointments and heart-breaks will do this when billow after billow rolls over us, and we are like a broken shell hurled to and fro by the surf. Blessed be God, at such seasons we are not without an all-sufficient comfort, our God is the harbour of weather-beaten sails, the hospice of forlorn pilgrims..

  14. It is pitiful to see men putting their trust in something lower than themselves; but our confidence is fixed upon an exceedingly high and glorious Lord. A Rock he is since he changes not, and a high Rock because the tempests which overwhelm us roll far beneath at his feet… If we get under the shelter of this lofty Rock we may defy the hurricane; all is calm under the lee of that towering cliff. Alas! such is the confusion in which the troubled mind is often cast, that we need piloting to this divine shelter. …. The wind blows us out to sea, we are too weak to work the rudder. You, you alone can steer us into the safe harbour. How dependent we are on you - we need you to bring us to you. - CH Spurgeon, Morning and evening: daily readings.

  15. So what does Jesus and the Bible show us about God the Father • He shows us… • Limitless love. Why should God care about us, but he does. • Limitless knowledge. So we can be vulnerable. • Limitless faithfulness. God is a rock • Limitless righteousness. Attitude of humility • Ps 89: 14. Righteousness and love are foundations of God’s throne • Isaiah 11: 3-4 With righteousness God judges • I John 4:11 ‘Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one-another.’

  16. How do we respond? • Limitless love. Why should God care about us, but he does. • Limitless knowledge. So we can be vulnerable • Limitless faithfulness. God is a rock • Limitless righteousness. Attitude of repentance ‘I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.’ Ephesians 1:17
