Although these plans are only a guide, they do however have several important features:- 1. Skills and drills are repeated, because you do not want a new skill and drill every week. Try to follow the “Practice Plans” from 1 to 16 2. Coaches can easily move individual skills, unit skills and team skills around to suit their individual team’s circumstances. 4. Individual Skills: Contact & Breakdown Smart((RUGBY))SA Exercise / Drill 54 “ The Maxi Contact Drill” Objective: To teach players the basics skills of how to hit and place the ball in contact. Exercise / Drill explanation: 1) The players stand in rows behind marker cone A and B. 2) Stage 1: On the signal of the coach the first player at A runs to B and drives into the first player at B, goes down and places the ball on the ground away from his body. 3) The defending player steps over the player on the ground and picks the ball up, then runs back to A, drives into the second player at A, goes down, places the ball for the defending player to pick the ball up to continue the drill. 4. Stage 2: Now a supporting player can run with the ball carrier to perform a clean-out on the defender. The coach can also use thee players, one to go down and place the ball, the second player to do the clean-out and the third player to bridge over the ball. Equipment: 1) A ball per drill. 2) 2 Marker cones to form the grid. Key coaching points: • Teach the players to hold the ball tightly against their body before they make contact with the shoulder furthest from the ball. • On the ground they must place the ball as far as possible using their upper bodies. 5m • CLICK • to play • to stop • to play • again B A Video Clip Exercise / Drill set up Press (Esc) to EXIT Back to HomePage
