Focus of the module • Banking Theory (Why do banks exist?) • Diversification and Internationalization in Banking • Regulation (focus on recent regulatory changes: Basel III, reforms in the UK and in Europe ...) • Central Banking • Banking risks and risk management • Bank Failures (determinants and case studies) • Financial Crises (especially the recent crisis: the shadow banking system, the impact of securitization....)

  4. Assessment • 2-hr written exam paper in January (100%). • The exam paper consists of two parts: • Multiple choices plus short questions (50%). • One essay (three topics) (50%).

Mishkin, F, The economics of money, banking and financial markets, International edition, Pearson Addison Wesley, most recent edition. • Reading Pack (for seminars) available at the beginning of the course. Selected articles suggested for each lecture.
