  1. Joe Cagdas • Thomas Curtin • Michael Zipps Gyure

  2. Imperialism Imperialism When one country takes over the economic social or political life of another.

  3. Panama Canal • 35000 people helped dig the waterway linking the Atlantic to Pacific across the Isthmus of Panama. More then 5000 workers die from disease of accidents while working on the canal.

  4. Panama Canal • Opened 1914 • Cut 8000 nautical miles off the trip from the west coast to the east coast in the US.

  5. Panama Canal • Total cost: $375,000,000 • Had an annual rent of 250,000 dollars

  6. “Big Stick” diplomacy • Theodor Roosevelt’s Diplomacy where a strong military is used to achieve American goals.

  7. “Big Stick” Diplomacy (cont) • Big stick diplomacy was started in America in 1900 and lasted until 1912 • The name came from Roosevelt's admiration for the African saying “speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far”.

  8. “Big Stick” Diplomacy (cont) • An example of Big Stick Diplomacy was the Panama Canal. When American Navy ships helped the Panamanian rebellion just to get the canal space, they were using “Big Stick” diplomacy.

  9. Dollar Diplomacy • William Howard Taft adopted Dollar Diplomacy. • This policy aimed to increase American investments in businesses and banks throughout Central America and the Caribbean. • The Dollar Diplomacy looked to substitute bullets with dollars

  10. Dollar Diplomacy • However sometimes they would have to resort back to Big Stick Diplomacy. Like in 1912 when Taft dispatched troops to Nicaragua to protect the formation of a pro American government

  11. Moral Diplomacy • President Wilson criticized the foreign policies of his Republican predecessors. • He said “The United Sates would never seek one additional foot of territory by conquest”

  12. Moral Diplomacy • He said he would instead work to promote human rights, national integrity, and opportunity. • Despite favoring Morale Diplomacy over Dollar and Big Stick Diplomacy, Wilson used the military on a number of occasions to guide Latin Americans in the directions that he saw proper.

  13. Differences • Even though many diplomacies were tried and tested the one found to be most effective was Big Stick Diplomacy • Dollar and Moral Diplomacy worked in some cases and was the less violent than Big Stick Diplomacy • However when American assets were at risk they would almost always revert back to Big Stick Diplomacy
