  1. Year 1 Phonics Screening Check 2015

  2. What is Phonics? • In Year One children have 20mins discrete phonics lessons 4 times per weekfollowing the RWI scheme. • Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate soundsor ‘phonemes’. They are then taught how to blendthese sounds together to read the whole word. • There are 44 different sounds.

  3. Read Write Inc order of sounds Set 1: Set 1 Sounds are taught in the following order: m a s d t, i n p g o, c k u b, f e l h sh, r j v y w, th z ch qu x ng nk

  4. What is the phonics screening check? • Every Year 1 child in the country will be taking the statutory phonics screening check in the same week. • The check is very similar to tasks the children already complete during phonics lessons. • The focus of the check is to provide evidence of children’s decoding and blending skills, not to test their vocabulary.

  5. What will the children do? • They will be asked to ‘sound out’ a word and blend the sounds together. e.g. d-o-g – dog • The check will consist of 40 words and non-words. • Children will be told if the word is a real or ‘alien’ word, with a corresponding alien image.

  6. Examples of words

  7. How will it be administered? • Teachers will conduct all of the screening checks with the children. • The children will complete the check one to one in a quiet area of the school. • We are not permitted to indicate to the children at the time whether they have correctly sounded out and / or blended the word.

  8. And the results...? • Children will be scored against a national standard. • Data will be submitted first and schools will be informed of the pass mark at a later date. • Parents will be informed of results. • If your child’s score falls below the national standard they will re-take the Phonics Screening Check in Year 2.

  9. When will it happen? • The screening will take place throughout the week beginning 15th June15 • It has been designed so that children of all abilities will be able to take part.

  10. How can you help? Encourage them to use their sounds and actions to find the sound they need. Encourage children to make up their own alien words using a variety of sounds. Children can practise their phonics by playing games online. The children particularly like - * Buried Treasure * Poopdeck Pirates * Picnic on Pluto

  11. Resources for you to take away to help • List of set 2 and set 3 sounds • (with the rhymes) • Phonics Alien word game • Phonics report identifying any sounds that your child needs to practise. • List of online games you may find useful.

  12. How can you help? • REMEMBER: Phonics is not the only way you become a good reader. Continue to read with your child each night and encourage them to: • Sound out, re-read to check it makes sense, and use pictures for clues. • Ask questions about the book; • And most importantly ENJOY READING!
