  2. Whatis Assistive Technology? Assistive Technology is any type of device and/or service provided to students with disabilities to better accommodate them be successful in the classroom and reach goals set in their Individualized Educational Plan. An assistive technology can be something so small like a pencil grip to something so large like a specialized wheel chair.

  3. Legal Obligations • Students cannot be denied any type of service or technology • Teachers have to abide to students IEPs at all times and provide appropriate accommodations • All teachers must learn how to use and apply technology in their classes

  4. Legal Obligations • The Assistive Technology act was passed to ensure and promote awareness to assistive technology • There are many grants and scholarships to receive assistive technology.

  5. Assistive Technology: Hearing Impaired • Augmentative and alternative Communication (AAC) Devices: Picture Board • A Picture board allows a student to communicate with someone using a keyboard with pictures. • A picture board can be modified anyway to better provide for the student.

  7. Seeing Impaired Screen Magnification software is a great program that enlarges text Magic 8.0 and ZoomText are two popular programs

  8. Learning Disabled Audio books allows students to read and listen to the text at the same time. They are great for students who have trouble reading and comprehending at the same time. Audio books also help students that have dyslexia and dysgraphia.

  9. Learning Disabled There is a large selection of Audio books on ITunes, Amazon, and audiobooks. Audiobooks can be downloaded onto any wireless device for easy access.

  10. Physically Disabled • There are many great resources available for physically disable people. One inexpensive piece is the mouth stick. • The mouth stick helps disabled students communicate inputs with their mouth.

  12. Assistive Technology Assistive technology helps disabled students reach their full potential in the classroom and at home. Teachers need to be aware how important it is to learn about the technology and how to use it in education.
