  2. Who is John Locke? • Jon Locke was a son of a puritan lawyer • John Locke was also an English philosopher • He wrote many books in the 1680’s • He became involved in the politics during the restoration • Regarded as one of the most influential Enlightment thinkers

  3. John Lockes Main Ideas • Locke argued that all humans possess “natural” human rights to life, liberty and property • People should surrender their natural rights to the government only order to protect those rights from the ill will of others. • If a government failed to protect the natural rights of its citizens then the people were allowed to revolt and overthrow the government.

  4. Influence on Society • Argued against king telling him that citizens had rights. • Went against the “Divine Right of Kings” • He had anti-royalist beliefs • Locke’s ideas made a foundation for the American government we are using today

  5. Major Events • In the 1680’s he wrote books about his beliefs like going against the Divine-Right theory • However, because of this he fled to Holland afraid that he was at risk for his anti-royalist beliefs • The church didn’t want these ideas to spread throughout France so they censored the books so no one will see them
