The Idea : A Revolution in Group Communication • Put a public address system in each room • Equal Opportunity, Student-Empowering: Anyone can post and receive announcements. • Distributed: A personal interface jack will be installed at each workstation • Personalized service, including different channels: • Weather • Ed • Food • Class Notes • More Ed
Performance Study • The System was Prototyped using: • A single cup • Two cups and an ethernet cable • Results were extrapolated from the data obtained from our two prototypes • The following function was observed • M = 2SQRT(ACK(cups,1)) • M: Message throughput • cups: Number of cups used • ACK: The famous Ackerman function • 2: a constant • 1: Another constant
Case Study I (Ed’s emails) • Before: • Students reported repetitive stress injuries from pressing SHIFT+DEL • Widespread jealousy from not being on a San Diego beach was detected • After: • With probability >0.5 students will be attending classes, meetings, lunches, ultimate, bowling, etc. whenever Ed makes an announcement • Reduces wasted electron usage drastically, thereby slowing the trend toward chaos (entropy) and gifting earth with increased longevity
Case Study II (Free Food Mails) • Before : • Frustration from reading a FFM 10 minutes too late • Time is wasted while eagerly awaiting a FFM • No substantial work gets done • There is a bias in terms of who gets the free food – towards nth-year slackers • Sometimes food has to be thrown away!!
Case Study II (Free Food Mails) • After : • Uniform Distribution of food • This preserves everyone’s Right to Equality • Hungry students hear the announcement, so they need not pay attention to the mail every 10 seconds; hence, they get some work done • Food will never be thrown away • Increased respect to those who produced it • Health improvements • There exists a race condition for getting to the food : the run down (or up) the stairs will contribute to a healthy lifestyle

Case Study IV : Lunch With Chair • Online teleconferencing • Save money on food • Anonymous messages to David • Can record what he says to play it back in the next teleconferencing (or whenever you wish – The Beard, on demand!)
Future Work • Make channels commercial • Prospective economic gain is high • Chateau connectivity • Currently, the residents are too far behind for such next-generation technology
