What Does a Civil Engineer Do? • Conduct different projects to improve and maintain roads, pipelines, dams, airports, bridges and other things
Types of Civil Engineers • Construction Engineer • Geotechnical Engineer • Structural Engineer • Transportation Engineer • Hydraulic Engineer • Environmental Engineer
Construction Engineer • Design • Highways • Dams • Airports • Buildings • Bridges • Railroads
Geotechnical Engineer • Specialize in manipulation of earth materials • How earth materials will interact with manmade structures • Design structures’ durability during earthquakes, tornados, and other natural disasters • Build: Dikes, tunnels, dams, reservoirs, channels, and canals
Structural Engineer • Anticipate Structure dangers • Build floors, beams, and columns • Differs from architecture
Transportation Engineer • Specialize in aerospace, air transportation, highway, railroads, and urban transportation designs • Design traffic lights and map operation of highways • Analyze high traffic areas
Hydraulic Engineer • Specialize in water systems, such as pipelines, dams, reservoirs , drainage • Deals with collection, storage, transport, and regulation of water.
Environmental Engineer • Study environmental issues such as acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, and water/air pollution • Specialize in recycling, radiation protection, industrial hygiene, and other public health issues
Workplace • Most work at least 40 hours a week • Usually work at construction sites where there is lots of manufacturing and business • Manager Projects, work on design, construction, and teaching
What Are The Required Educational Skills? • Requires good mathematics, design, and science skills • It’s a 4 year degree to receive a bachelor’s • Certification by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology)
