Orthopaedics • Only existed as a branch of General Surgery before the Second World War. • Largely consisted of the treatment of Fractures. • After WW2, returning veterans had a variety of permanent injuries, requiring a new subspecialty with new knowledge. • In 1952, Polio struck North America, affecting the “baby boomers” primarily.
Orthopaedics Imagine a world, made “free for democracy” at the cost of millions of lives, that now had to deal with the highly visible, human cost of that victory maimed soldiers, and betrayed by polio, that affected the first fruit of that victory young children, born to the very people that had suffered to win the war.
Orthopaedics This produced a huge psychologic effect on most of the western world. Interest was generated in the field of medically correctible deformity. - fractures. - congenital deformities. - amputations. - paediatric illness.
