  1. The State of Grace

  2. 1. To “be in the State of Grace” means the following. It means EITHER that the person has not committed any mortal sins OR, if the person has committed any mortal sins, they have already been forgiven in the sacrament of Confession.

  3. 2. How does a person KNOW if they have committed a mortal sin? A person has committed a mortal sin iff he fulfills ALL THREE of…..

  4. The Three Conditions of a Mortal Sin:a. Grave Matter: the act committed is something serious.

  5. b. Knowledge: the person knew that the act was something serious.

  6. c. Full Consent: the person freely and consciously chose to do the act.

  7. Iff ALL THREE conditions are met, the sin is a mortal sin and the person needs to go to Confession.

  8. 3. Note: if ANY ONE of these three conditions is not met, then the act is NOT a mortal sin and does NOT require sacramental Confession for forgiveness. You need ALL THREE or it is NOT a mortal sin.

  9. 4. The Five Steps of a Good Confessiona. Examination of Conscience: think of what sins you have committed since your last confession.

  10. b. Act of Contrition: tell God you are truly sorry for having committed these sins.

  11. c. Firm Resolution of Amendment: resolve firmly never to commit these sins again.

  12. d. Confession of Sins: confess your sins orally to a Catholic priest in the sacrament.

  13. e. Penance: do the penance the priest gives you to do, such as say certain prayers, etc.

  14. 5. Note: in the Sacrament of Confession, we should be assured of three things:

  15. a. The Priest can NEVER reveal our sins to ANYONE; this is the “Seal of Confession” and it is ABSOLUTE.

  16. Priest cannot (in any way) act on the knowledge he has received in Confession.

  17. b. Once we leave that confession, ALL of our sins are completely forgiven by the Lord. For SURE.

  18. c. This is the “Sacrament of Joy” because it restores us to the Grace of God and makes us happy.
