BEST Robotics Hardware Overview Courtney Pinnell and BrinaSaldivar AWEE (Association of Women in Electrical Engineering)
VEX Cortex Microcontroller • Coordinates the flow of information and power on the robot • All other electronic system components must interface to the Microcontroller • STMicroelectronics ARM Cortex-M3 user processor
Microcontroller Features • Wireless with built-in VEXnet technology • (8) Standard 3-wire Motor ports • (2) 2-wire Motor ports • (1) I2C "smart sensor" port • (2) UART Serial Ports • (8) Hi-res (12-bit) Analog Inputs • (12) Fast digital I/O ports which can be used as interrupts • Programmable with easyC v4 for Cortex or ROBOTC for Cortex & PIC
Futaba S3003 Servo • Electric Motor where you can control position • Specs: • Speed: • 0.23 sec/60° @ 4.8V • 0.19 sec/60° @ 6V • Torque: • 44 oz-in (3.2 kg-cm) @ 4.8V • 57 oz-in (4.1 kg-cm) @ 6V
BEST Large Motor • Operates at 7.2V • Free Speed: 43 RPM • Stall Torque: 23.53 in*lbs • Stall Current: 3.34 amps • Free Current: 0.32 amps
BEST Small Motor • Operates at 7.2V • Free Speed: 90 RPM • Stall Torque: 9.49 in*lbs • Stall Current: 2.39 amps • Free Current: 0.21 amps
Motor Controller • This Motor Controller takes the PWM control signal from the VEX Controller and coverts that to a varying DC voltage which the VEXplorer Motor requires • The Motor Controller is thermal limited to about 1A • Red Wire: • Battery input. 9V max • Black Wire: • Ground • White Wire: • PWM Input: 1ms - 2ms will give full reverse to full forward, 1.5ms is neutral
Wireless USB Adapter • Works with the VEX Cortex Microcontroller to communicate wirelessly with your robot • 802.11b/g wireless USB device
VEXnet Joystick • The VEXnet Joystick allows a human operator to control a robot in real-time using the innovative VEXnet 802.11 Wireless link
VEXnet Joystick • The joystick has two 2-axis analog joysticks, 4 trigger buttons and two 4-button directional pads • It also has a 3-Axis Accelerometer that provides X-Y tilt outputs, X-Y-Z acceleration and a shake output • This allows you to control an arm or drive system by changing the orientation of the joystick (tilting, turning or shaking)
easyC for Cortex • Drag-and-drop programming to the VEX Cortex Microcontroller • Full C text editor for advanced, customized programming • Enhanced Online window to manually test motors and sensors • Download to the robot wirelessly • 14 Tutorials and over 50 sample files included
