Commas • There are three main times to use commas correctly. 90% of the time you will ever have to use a comma will fit under one of these three times. (Dates, Places, and Quotations aren’t included in these main three.)
1. Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet. • Mapleton Jr. High School is just like the Justice League Watchtower, for they are both full of superheroes. • Both hobbits and Mrs. Adams are short, but Mrs. Adams is not a hobbit. • Batman refuses to kill people, so he is allowed to be a cartoon.

3. Use commas where there is a natural pause. • A. Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause. • First, you put your right foot in. • Then, you put your right foot out. • Lastly, you shake it all about.
